Amid widespread criticism of the comments he made about the cortege video of former Philippine president Corazon “Cory” Aquino, “Wowowee” host Willie Revillame has gone on leave “indefinitely.”
Here’s an excerpt from the abs-cbnNews.com article.
Willie Revillame is on leave “indefinitely” in the wake of the controversy generated by his order to cut the simultaneous live broadcast of the procession of President Corazon Aquino’s remains from his noontime show last August 3.
“Yes, naka-leave [siya]. From his (Revillame) own text [message] to me, indefinitely,” Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN’s corporate communications, told abs-cbnNEWS.com in a phone interview.
For those who haven’t seen it, here’s the YouTube clip of Revillame commenting on the Aquino cortege video.
A report from the Manila Bulletin, however, has stated that Revillame has gone on a three-week leave.
In an interview with Philippine Entertainment Portal, “Wowowee” director and Star Magic head Johnny Manahan spoke up in defense of Revillame. The article noted that Manahan was speaking as a “personal friend and ally” of Revillame and not in an official capacity for the network.
An earlier report on INQUIRER.net said Revillame was “unperturbed” by the online petition calling for his ouster. The petition has gathered 34,020 signatures as of this writing.
According to this column piece on PhilStar.com, Kris Aquino said Revillame has apologized to her and her family, and that for her, “end of story na.”
Meanwhile, on Aug. 7, Aquino family spokesperson Dee Dee Siytangco rebuked Revillame, issuing a statement that said: “It is regrettable and a crass attempt to desecrate the memory of the beloved Tita Cory.”
Another abs-cbnNews.com story dated Aug. 7 reported that Revillame apologized anew, and that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board was mulling sanctions against Revillame.
On Aug. 6, the Alyansa ng Filipinong Mamamahayag issued a statement against Revillame, condemning his arrogance and calling on the MTRCB to give him “the hardest lesson.”
Will Revillame be returning to “Wowowee,” and will ABS-CBN issue an official statement about his leave?
Stay tuned.

There was nothing wrong with what Willie said, he is honest and felt bad about the unfairness of the simultaneous showings of the gyrating women with insert of the solemn precession of Pres Cory’s remain. It was unfair for the Aquino family and ufair for his show as well.
The blame is on ABS-CBN. Not on Willie. He maybe a cocky guy, but he is honest with what he felt…The probelm is: we’re not in other parts of the world, we are in the Philippines. Madali tayong madala sa sinasabi ng lahat against Willie. There are a lot of people who don’t like him, because of inggit..a lot wishes him gone…because he is succesful. Why do people feel so threatened by successful people?? Well, If ABS-CBN bigwigs know better, they should take the blame, the show will go on…the rating had fallen since his Wowowee’s no-shows for the last 3 weeks. I have not turned on the TFC, since then and turned to see the beginnig of Darna and , you know what…I came to appreciate Eat Bulaga..How is that Ms. Charo Santos-Concio…and I am just a small Fil-American fan here, how about the world’s TFC subscribers turing to GMA 7 since Willie left??
Willie should know better, the big guys in the Philippine politics and some peole from the other networks are the ones who are against him, because he has money, they want to put him down in every way possible. Shame on the culture of my native land..When you reached the top, they will do everything to put a good man down. ABS-CBN had backed down now, they sided with Willie. The MRTC department is nothing but washed-out, good for nothing institution that could be swayed whoever has a good pull.
I enjoy watching Bob Barker in Las Vegas just like Willie who makes our life a little bit easier relaxing after work. I'm so angy now that I can't watch Willie and I'll be spearheading subscription BOYCOTT to all Filipino Channel in the United States.
