On September 9, which marked the 40th day of the death of former Philippine president and democracy icon Corazon “Cory” Aquino, her son Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III announced that he would continue the fight for democracy by running in the 2010 presidential elections.

Many Filipino Internet users eagerly awaited the senator’s announcement, monitoring and sharing the coverage of his press conference on microblogging sites such as Plurk and Twitter and social networking sites such as Facebook.

It’s a sad day indeed for Filipinos as we woke up to the news that former Philippine president Corazon “Cory” Aquino has passed away.

Here’s an excerpt from my CNET Asia blog post.

Filipinos all over the world had been praying and showing their support for Aquino, who has been confined in the hospital for more than a month, battling colon cancer. This support was also extended online, including adding a yellow ribbon to their Twitter avatar. With the news of her death, Corazon Aquino is now one of the top Trending Topics on Twitter.

We will never forget you, Cory. Rest in peace.
