The end of YouTube as we know it?

Here’s an excerpt from my latest CNET Asia blog post.

What will happen to a site that was built on user-generated content (UGC) when it decides to de-emphasize the UGC that made it wildly popular in the first place?

We’ll find out if reports are true that the upcoming YouTube redesign will showcase premium content from TV networks and movie studios while relegating UGC to a Videos tab. This is what Mashable calls the “Hulufication of YouTube” (referring to NBC and News Corp.’s Hulu online video service), which I came across via Mike Abundo’s blog post.

What’s your take on this?

Watch Transformers Generation 1 and other free shows online on Joost

I haven’t been using Joost since it switched off its P2P app and became a website-only service, but I decided to visit it today.

It’s good actually that Joost has reinvented itself into an online video service, and that it also allows you to embed its videos.

Some of the videos can’t be viewed due to regional blocks, but it offers enough shows to make it worth your while to check out the site.

For instance, you can watch episodes of the Transformers Generation 1 animated series.

Here’s the clip of Season 1, Episode 1.

Happy viewing!
