Braceletgate: Filipino bloggers slam Jamby Madrigal for “defiling” Cory Aquino funeral

In what you might call Braceletgate, Senator Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal has earned the ire of Filipino bloggers for the yellow beaded bracelets that were being given away during the memorial services for former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino on August 5.

The bracelets included a picture of Madrigal, who, incidentally, had announced on July 31 that she would run for president in 2010 in a move that caught even her colleagues by surprise, based on this INQUIRER.net article.

Online petition vs ‘Wowowee’ host Willie Revillame for reaction to Cory Aquino cortege video; Cory tweets inundate Twitter

UPDATE: Willie Revillame has apologized for the remarks, according to this INQUIRER.net story. Meanwhile, the online petition launched by irate viewers and Internet users against Revillame has gathered 7,309 signatures, as of this writing.

An online petition has been launched urging Philippine broadcast giant ABS-CBN to reprimand Willie Revillame, host of the network’s popular noontime show “Wowowee”.

Filipino viewers and Internet users have been condemning the remarks Revillame made while a video feed of former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino’s cortege was shown during the “Wowowee” broadcast on Monday, August 3. Here’s a YouTube clip showing Revillame’s reaction.

Today, August 5, the Filipino nation will bid farewell one final time to the woman who restored democracy in the Philippines and inspired peaceful People Power revolutions in other countries (some successful, some not).

Thousands of Filipinos are expected to turn out for the funeral of former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino, with thousands more inside and outside the country watching the live video streams of GMANews.TV and ABS-CBN and interacting with fellow mourners online on social networks, such as on Facebook through this President Cory Aquino Facebook Page and the Global Wake for Cory Aquino in Cyberspace Facebook event.
