Conan O’Brien and the Bugatti Veyron Mouse

Conan O’Brien gave an emotional farewell to fans on his final night as the host of NBC’s The Tonight Show.

At times fighting back tears, O’Brien thanked his legions of fans Friday night for making “a sad situation joyous and inspirational,” urging them to fight cynicism over the ugly public feud that ended his seven-month tenure at the legendary late-night comedy show.

The audience at Universal Studios in Burbank, California replied in kind, giving him a standing ovation and chanting “Conan! Conan! Conan!” repeatedly.

After an experiment placing the funnyman’s predecessor in prime time garnered meager ratings and frustrated the network’s affiliates, NBC television announced it would bring Jay Leno back to the show he hosted for 17 years.

We’ll have to wait and see to find out which network will Conan join after leaving NBC, but you can bet that we’ll see him hosting a new show soon.

In the meantime, let’s all have a good laugh over the instant classic that is the Bugatti Veyron Mouse segment, in which Conan sticks it to NBC with what is being touted as “the most expensive skit” in the history of late night shows.

And here’s a clip of Conan’s farewell speech.

Are you on Team Leno or Team Conan?

I confess: I don’t really like either Jay Leno or Conan O’Brien, though I can stand watching Leno more than Conan. Still, I have to agree that Conan got screwed. Actually, it’s NBC that’s to blame: they basically sabotaged the shows of Leno and O’Brien by insisting in having their cake and eating it too.

No one involved in this mess will end up looking good.

Here’s an excerpt from the AP story on Yahoo! Philippines News.

“It is a PR nightmare, not just for NBC but for Leno and Conan,” said Todd Gold, managing editor of Fancast.com.

“What is most surprising is seeing this happen on the network that carries their shows,” Gold told Reuters.

Media reports on Friday suggested NBC was close to resolving the mess. The Daily Beast said O’Brien would exit NBC with a large payout and be free to take a job elsewhere, despite reported threats from NBC that it would prevent him from working on a rival channel.

Who do you believe is to blame for this mess?

Personally, I’ve always been on Team Letterman, so I’ll just keep watching Dave Letterman.

Here’s a clip of Letterman discussing the Leno-O’Brien-NBC “debacle”.

And here he is wondering if Leno will do the right thing.

Here’s a clip of Leno and O’Brien both bashing NBC on their shows.
